United Kingdom

  • Known for: Leading universities (Oxford, Cambridge), progressive chemical safety policies, and strong consumer protections.

  • But: Corteva and Ineos export banned carcinogens and endocrine disruptors to South Africa.

Portugal

  • Known for: Clean energy transition, eco-tourism, and sustainable agriculture initiatives.

  • But: Ascenza exports chlorpyrifos, a pesticide banned for its neurodevelopmental risks.

Italy

  • Known for: Mediterranean diet and agriculture based on strict food safety laws.

  • But: Sipcam Oxon continues to export highly toxic fungicides like chlorothalonil.

United States

  • Known for: World-leading biotech and pharmaceutical innovation, and the EPA’s role in environmental enforcement (within its own borders).

  • But: U.S.-based FMC (via EU hubs) exports banned chemicals to Africa through subsidiaries like Cheminova.

France

  • Known for: Banning dangerous cosmetics ingredients in the EU, and for being a global leader in cosmetic regulation.

  • But: L’Oréal’s African exports still include harmful ingredients banned in France itself.

Netherlands

  • Known for: Sustainability leadership, circular economy innovations, and high environmental standards.

  • But: Dutch-based multinationals like Unilever continue to use banned NP-ethoxylates abroad.

Belgium

  • Known for: Hosting the EU Parliament and major regulatory agencies, with strong worker and environmental protections.

  • But: Belgian companies like Tizara are central players in exporting industrial toxins banned in the EU.
